Once again, I am joining in the Three Things Challenge. Here are the instructions:
Use your imagination and creativity using one, two or all three words that may or may not be related. There are no restrictions regarding length, style, or genre, though please keep it family friendly.
Today’s words are: FIGURE, FRANK, FIRST
“Frank! I’m so glad you called. Where are you?”
No response other than static. I wouldn’t have know who was calling if it weren’t for the caller ID.
“Are you there? I know I wasn’t supposed to get here first, but the traffic was light. Where are you now? When will you get here?”
More static.
Feeling a bit frantic and frustrated, I tapped the phone on the steering wheel and tried again. “Are you okay? Talk to me. I’m counting to ten, then I’m going to hang up.”
Static again but with a faint whisper of something different. I inhaled and started to count. I figured he was pranking me.
“One, two, three, four, five…FRANK! Talk to me! Six, seven, eight, nine…I’m not joking.” I shouted out the final number, “Ten! I’m pressing the hang-up button now…” Of course, I didn’t.
My voice became a whine. “Fraaaannnk…just tell me where you are and I’ll come get you.”
I heard a throat clear on the other end. “Frank, is that you?”
A brusque voice broke in. “Who is this? Who am I talking to?”
“Um, Terri Whitstead. I’m a friend of Frank Lawton’s. Who are you?”
“Officer Standish. There’s been a bit of a snafu. I think your friend will be fine but a bit late for wherever he was headed.”
I gulped. “Can I talk to him?”
“I’ll have him call you as soon as the EMTs have checked him over.”
“Can you tell me more? He called and I, um, well…”
The officer laughed. “It may have been a butt dial when he fell.”
“Fell?”
“Um, yeah. I’ll let him explain how it happened. It was fairly hilarious according to the witnesses.”
“Oh, okay. He is a bit accident-prone. Thank you for picking up the phone.”
He chuckled again. “Be sure to ask him what happened to the watermelon.”
It was my turn to laugh, picturing what might have happened. “Okay. Thanks again. I think I can figure it out. Just have him call me when he’s done.” As I sat and waited for Frank’s call, I thought back over the years we had known each other. Nothing was too out of the way for him and his accidents had all been superficial. It sounded like this had been the same. My phone rang again, it was Frank. At least his number was showing.
“Frank? Is that you?”
“Um, yeah. So sorry about the delay.”
“The officer told me you’d had an accident? Something about a watermelon?”
A sigh whistled through the phone. “Someone took a photo. Hang on and I’ll send it to you.”
I stared at the phone waiting for the picture. When it appeared, I couldn’t hold back the laughter. I snorted and Frank responded.
“Thanks for laughing at me.”
“You have to admit you look pretty funny with that watermelon split in half and sitting on your head. So, are we still on for lunch?”
Thanks for joining in Donna. Fun piece!
Thanks, this one just sort of took on a life of it’s own!
